Many of my students have writtten with great certainty that since many people follow different morals, there must not be a single right moral standard. This is like observing that everyone is driving different speeds on the freeway so there must not be a speed limit. Of course, this is possible–maybe no one has posted a speed limit. It could be Germany’s autobahn. But another possible and more likely explanation is that many are ignoring the speed limit.
For years there were multiple theories about the cause of thunder: gods speaking, giants wrestling, hippos hopping. We could have used this variety of explanations as proof that no true explanation exists. But we now know the real casuse of thunder.
Just because we see through a glass darkly doesn’t mean there is no light.
